Craving rich, chocolatey brownies but navigating dietary restrictions? Look no further! These incredible gluten-free and dairy-free brownies deliver everything you love about classic brownies: dense, fudgy centers, delightful chewy edges, and an intense chocolate flavor. Best of all, they come together effortlessly in just one bowl, making them a perfect, fuss-free dessert for any occasion. Designed with common allergies in mind, this recipe is also free from fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame, with a convenient soy-free option available. Prepare to make these a regular in your baking rotation!

Why These Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Brownies Are Simply Irresistible
There’s a reason these brownies disappear so quickly in my home – they truly are *that* good. Imagine a brownie with a perfectly crispy, slightly crinkled top and satisfyingly chewy corners, giving way to a luxuriously fudgy and rich interior that practically melts in your mouth. This isn’t just an “okay” allergy-friendly brownie; it’s a brownie that stands toe-to-toe with any traditional recipe, minus the gluten and dairy. The secret to their unparalleled fudginess lies in a clever technique: using not just large eggs, but also two additional egg yolks. This boosts the fat content and creates an exceptionally thick batter, which bakes into brownies with an unbelievably dense, melt-in-your-mouth texture that will have everyone reaching for another piece. They embody all the desirable qualities of a perfect brownie, without compromise.
Achieving Dairy-Free Perfection: Ingredient Choices
Making these brownies dairy-free is surprisingly straightforward, thanks to the increasing availability of high-quality dairy-free alternatives. The key substitutes are dairy-free butter and dairy-free chocolate chips. Beyond these two, most other brownie ingredients are naturally dairy-free. When selecting your dairy-free butter, opt for a stick-style plant-based butter, as these tend to have a similar fat content and behave like traditional butter in baking, contributing to that desired fudgy texture. Spreads in tubs often contain more water, which can affect the final consistency. For chocolate chips, the market now offers a fantastic variety of dairy-free options, ensuring you can find something to suit your taste and dietary needs. We’ll delve deeper into specific brand recommendations shortly.
Mastering Gluten-Free Baking: Flour Selection
These brownies achieve their gluten-free status by utilizing an all-purpose gluten-free flour blend. It’s crucial to select a reputable brand that includes xanthan gum in its mix, as this ingredient mimics the elasticity and binding properties of gluten, providing structure and preventing crumbly baked goods. If your chosen blend does not contain xanthan gum, you may need to add about ½ teaspoon per cup of flour. Alternatively, for those who prefer a more customized approach, you can explore making your own homemade gluten-free brownie mix. While many ingredients are naturally gluten-free, it is always wise to double-check every single product label, as some brands might unexpectedly include gluten-containing additives.
When it comes to gluten-free flours, consistency is key. I’ve had great success with the affordable Great Value All Purpose Gluten-free Flour from Walmart. Another excellent and widely available option is King Arthur’s 1:1 baking flour. I strongly advise sticking to these recommended brands or others explicitly designed for 1:1 substitution in baking. Different gluten-free flour brands use unique ratios of various grains and starches (like rice flour, tapioca starch, potato starch, sorghum flour, etc.), and these variations can significantly impact the final texture of your brownies. Experimenting with unverified brands might lead to a less-than-perfect result, so it’s best to proceed with caution.
Choosing the Best Dairy-Free Butter for Fudgy Brownies
For achieving that rich, buttery flavor and perfect texture, the right dairy-free butter is essential. My personal favorite is Country Crock’s Plant Butter with Olive Oil, which comes in stick form. This product performs exceptionally well in baking, melting smoothly and contributing to the dense, fudgy consistency without any off-flavors. Its composition is very similar to traditional butter, making it an ideal substitute for high-fat recipes like brownies. Always look for dairy-free butter in stick format rather than tubs, as sticks generally have a lower water content, which is crucial for preventing a cakey texture in brownies.

Selecting Dairy-Free Chocolate Chips for Optimal Flavor
The chocolate chips are a critical component for these brownies, delivering that essential rich chocolate flavor. I was genuinely devastated when Costco discontinued their Kirkland Semi-Sweet chocolate chips, as I found them to be the absolute best dairy-free option. If they ever make a comeback, don’t hesitate to stock up! In the absence of my top pick, I now rotate between a few fantastic alternatives, often combining them to achieve a balanced flavor profile and manage costs. My current go-to brands include Endangered Species Chocolate Premium Oat Milk Baking Chips (55% cocoa), Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Mini Chips, and Ghirardelli Non-Dairy Dark Chocolate Chips for Baking. I often buy whichever is on sale and mix them into a large bag of chocolate chips. This method not only helps in cost savings but also creates a more complex and rounded chocolate flavor from the blend of different brands and cocoa percentages.
As you can observe in the accompanying photos, my brownies have a lighter hue, a reflection of my preference for a “milk chocolate” style brownie. However, if you’re a fan of deeper, darker chocolate, you can easily customize this recipe. Simply opt for darker dairy-free chocolate morsels, such as Enjoy Life Allergy Friendly Dairy-Free Dark Chocolate morsels, and choose a darker unsweetened cocoa powder to achieve that intense, rich dark chocolate brownie experience.
Making These Brownies Soy-Free Too
For those with soy allergies, it’s entirely possible to make these delicious gluten-free and dairy-free brownies completely soy-free. The primary ingredients to watch are the dairy-free butter and chocolate chips, as some brands may contain soy. To ensure a soy-free end product, I highly recommend using Earth Balance’s soy-free buttery sticks. This particular product is specifically formulated without soy and bakes beautifully. For the chocolate chips, Enjoy Life brand is an excellent choice, as their products are widely known for being free from many common allergens, including soy. Always double-check ingredient labels on all products to confirm they meet your specific dietary requirements.
Choosing the Right Cocoa Powder for Flavor and Color
The type of cocoa powder you use significantly impacts both the flavor and color of your brownies. For our family, we are comfortable with “may contain” statements (though we always advise consulting your doctor about your specific severity levels). We typically use Great Value Baking Cocoa’s Unsweetened Cocoa Powder, which is readily available and produces excellent results. However, please feel free to use any brand of unsweetened baking cocoa that you feel most comfortable with, especially if you have stricter cross-contamination concerns. The most important distinction is to use baking cocoa, not hot cocoa mix or any sweetened drink powder, as these contain sugar and other additives that will throw off the recipe’s balance. Whether it’s natural cocoa powder or Dutch-processed cocoa powder doesn’t typically make a huge difference in this recipe, so use whichever you prefer or have on hand. Dutch-processed cocoa tends to be darker and less acidic, while natural cocoa is lighter and fruitier.
Essential Tools for Easy Brownie Baking
One of the beauties of this recipe is its simplicity, requiring minimal equipment. You can literally whip up these brownies using just a sturdy spatula and a large mixing bowl, mixing everything by hand, as demonstrated in the accompanying video. This method ensures you won’t overmix the batter, which is especially important for gluten-free baked goods. For those who prefer a more hands-off approach, a stand mixer like a Kitchenaid with a paddle attachment works wonderfully, just be mindful not to over-mix once the flour is added. Regardless of your mixing method, you’ll also need standard measuring spoons and cups for accuracy, and hot pads for safely handling the hot pan from the oven.

Selecting the Perfect Baking Pan for Pristine Brownie Edges
The choice of baking pan can make a surprising difference in your brownie experience. I personally can’t stand the rounded corners that often result from using a glass baking dish. Everyone deserves a perfect, sharp-edged brownie corner! That’s why I wholeheartedly recommend a rectangular metal baking pan, specifically one that ensures perfectly flat, crisp corners. This type of pan distributes heat more evenly and allows for cleaner cuts, ensuring every brownie square is a winner. If you frequently bake cakes and brownies, investing in a good quality metal pan will elevate your results significantly. For this recipe, a standard 13×9 inch pan is ideal to achieve the correct thickness and baking time.
Can You Freeze These Fudgy Brownies? Absolutely!
Yes, these delicious gluten-free and dairy-free brownies are perfectly freezer-friendly! If you find yourself with more brownies than you can (or should) eat in a few days, or if you simply want to bake ahead for future treats, freezing is a fantastic option. Although in my house, we tend to fight over the last piece before they even get a chance to be frozen, the method is straightforward for those who manage to resist! To freeze, first ensure the brownies are completely cooled to room temperature. Then, wrap individual brownies or smaller sections tightly in plastic wrap, ensuring no air exposure. Once wrapped, place them inside a zip-top freezer-safe bag or an airtight container to prevent freezer burn. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply unwrap the desired number of brownies and let them thaw at room temperature. They’ll be just as fudgy and delicious as when they were freshly baked.

Elevate Your Brownies with Delicious Mix-Ins
While these brownies are incredible on their own, they also serve as a fantastic canvas for your favorite mix-ins! You can add approximately 2 cups of additional ingredients to the batter without compromising the texture. Feel free to get creative! Beyond extra chocolate chips, common additions include walnuts (though my son has nut allergies, so we skip them), pecans, dried cranberries or cherries for a fruity twist, white chocolate chips (dairy-free, of course!), or even crushed dairy-free pretzels for a salty-sweet crunch. You could also swirl in a spoonful of dairy-free caramel or peanut butter (if not allergic) before baking. Customize to your heart’s content and make these brownies uniquely yours!

Ingredients
- 20 Tablespoons dairy free butter (2 and 1/2 sticks)
- 1 cup dairy free chocolate chips
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 and 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs + 2 egg yolks
- 1 TBSP vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 and 1/2 cups gluten-free all purpose flour, with xanthan included (see notes)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 13×9 rectangular pan with non-stick spray and set aside.
- In a large microwave bowl, add your dairy-free butter and chocolate chips. Melt in your microwave 30 seconds at a time, stirring after each set until the chocolate chips are melted.
- Add in your sugars and stir well.
- Add in your eggs and egg yolks and whisk well.
- Add in your vanilla extract and salt and whisk well until fully combined and the mixture is light and airy.
- Add in your cocoa powder and stir.

- Spread evenly into your greased pan.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the edges are set and the middle is done as much as you like (some may like it a little less or a little more depending on how fudgy you like them). A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with moist crumbs, not wet batter.
- Allow to cool completely on a wire rack before cutting into them. This is crucial for achieving that perfect fudgy texture and clean cuts.
- Store room temperature, covered tightly, for up to 3-4 days, or freeze for longer storage.

*Our allergies, while severe and that get re-tested frequently, are such that we can go strictly by what’s on the label. I do not call companies to see what things are derived from, or call manufacturers to see about potential cross contact. If your allergies require you to do so, please do your own homework. I cannot assure you of any ingredient’s safety, only you can do that. I simply share what works for our family.
**If you are going to feed this to someone with food allergies, and you yourself do not have food allergies, I HIGHLY recommend having them check every single brand and ingredient you are using, to ensure they’re OK with each part of the recipe. And, to make sure you’ve talked to them about how to avoid cross contamination in your kitchen.
